Prof A Jayakrishnan, PhD, F.A.Sc, is the 19th Vice-Chancellor of University of Kerala. He assumed office on 15th December 2008. He hails from Palakkad District of Northern Kerala. He did his graduation and post graduation in Chemistry from University of Calicut in 1973 and 1975 respectively and received his Ph.D in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1980. He was Scientist and Head of the Polymer Chemistry Division, Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, from 1985 to 2007 and thereafter appointed Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, a position which he retains along with his Vice-chancellorship.He has held various positions in reputed Universities and Institutes including: (1) Visiting Professor, Department of Biomechanics, Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, (2) Visiting Scientist, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Paris-Sud (Paris XI), Chateney-Malabry, France, (3) JSPS Invitation Fellow, Department of Applied Chemistry, Toyo University, Saitama, Japan. (4) Visiting Scientist, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA, (5) British Council Scholar, Institute of Medical and Dental Bioengineering, University of Liverpool, England, (6) Postdoctoral Associate, Biomedical Engineering Centre, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA (7) Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA. He has also held charge as Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science and Technology for about a year, during 2010. His area of research is Polymers for medical and related applications. He has published in reputed journals such as Nature and Biomaterials.
