The University of Kerala has a history of more than seven decades of dedicated service in redefining the educational and social profile of the State of Kerala. The elevated status that it enjoys in Kerala’s contemporary history is due to the contributions of a socially committed and ever vigilant academic community, which includes generations of students. This ‘Mother University’ of the State of Kerala has always been a pioneer in implementing many a measure aimed at the welfare of students. For instance, this is the first University in the country to ensure the presence of a student representative in the Syndicate. At present, there are 10 students in the Academic Council and 16 students in the Senate, the Supreme Authority of the University. The University also has a Students' Council and a Statutory Hostel Inspection Board to look after the welfare of students in the hostels.
