The Senate, reconstituted every four years, has 117 members—24 Ex-officio, 78 elected and 15 nominated. In a sense, it represents a cross section of the society. With its members drawn from different walks of social life, which include, apart from teachers and students, members of the Legislative Assembly, local authorities of each district, registered trade unions, non-teaching staff of the University and Colleges, managers of private colleges, headmasters, school teachers, recognized research institutions and cultural associations, chambers of commerce, industries, authors, journalists, lawyers, sports persons and linguistic minorities. The Senate, which meets at least once in four months, is “the Supreme Authority of the University” and has vast legislative powers. The list of the members of Senate as on 1st July 2010, is given below.
