The Department of Sanskrit started functioning in 1963 with Dr. A. G. Krishna Warrier, one of the noted Indologists of that time as its Head with research facilities for only Ph.D students. M.Phil and M.A courses were introduced in 1975 and 1984 respectively. The Department aimed at, from its inception, the promotion of higher studies and research in the different branches of Sanskrit learning. It has achieved growth and development during the last four decades.
