The Department of philosophy started functioning in 1979 under the Department of psychology. Dr. K. Saratchandran was appointed as Reader in Philosophy on 7-11-1979. He was assigned the task of research guidance and to initiate steps to start a fullfledged Department of Philosophy as per the Provisions of the University Act, Statutes and Regulations. The research scholars who were undertaking research activities in the University College were transferred to the University Department of Psychology. The first batch of Research Scholars Smt. D. Nesy, Smt. S. Omana, Sri. C.A.Padmanabhan completed their research and submitted their thesis in 1980, 1981 and 1982 respectively and degrees were also awarded to them within 18 months to two years. All of them were faculty in philosophy working in different Government Colleges. Two more research scholars completed their research and joined in the collegiate Service. Later on Smt. V. Sujatha, Sri. Alphonse Louis Erayil and Sri. D. Elias were awarded PhD. Degree. In course of time, the University decided to give the status of a fullfledged Department to the Department of Philosophy. In 1985 the Department of philosophy became an independent Department with Dr. K. Saratchandran, as the founder Professor. The inauguration of the Department was conducted with an All India Seminar on Language Terminology. The Seminar was fully funded by the Government of India. Subsequently M. Phil and M.A courses were started in the years, 1990 & 1993
Dr. D. Nesy joined as lecturer in 1989. In 1990, M.Phil Programe started for Philosophy students with an average intake of six students per year. Syllabus revised in 2003 and 2006 (partial) and this pre-research programme is being run successfully till date. In 1993 M.A. program started under the annual pattern, switched over to Credit and Semester System (CSS) from 1995 onwards with periodical revision of syllabus.

Diversified courses are offered both under Core and Electives.
Elective courses open to the students of other Departments are offered by the Department.
Apart from teaching and research the Department conducted 64th session of Indian Philosophy Congress, I.C.P.R Seminar of Young Philosophy meet, Refresher courses in Philosophy in collaboration with University College. Dr. K. Saratchandran was deputed by the University to All India Conference, I.C.P.R meetings and several other conferences he was nominated as a member of the I.C.P.R in the year, 1990. He was selected as Joint Secretary represented the world Philosophy conference twice. He and Dr. Elias represented the world Philosophy Conference and Conference on Recent Trends in contemporary western Philosophy and published several research papers in Journals.

From 2001 to 2006 three more teachers Dr. R. Lekshmi, Dr. P. Radha Rani,Dr. N.M Faizal were working in the Department on contract basis who got regular appointment as lectures in Government College’s. Dr. T.M Smitha was working as lecturer from 2007-2009 on contract basis, who also joined in Government Service. Smt. Ambili. S (2009 onwards) working as lecturer on contract basis Currently the Faculty position is 1 Professor, 1 Reader, 1 Lecturer & 1 Lecturer (on contract).
