It was  in 1961 that a  Department of Youth Welfare was established in the  University,to promote social and cultural activities among the students.  The University Union, which also started functioning in the same period, aimed at the welfare of the students in the affiliated colleges. Later, this department was renamed Department of Student Services and the elected members of the University Union began to steer the activities under the guidance of the Director, Student  Services.

The office of the Director, Student Services and the University Union function at the Students’ Centre , near PMG ofice in Thiruvananthapuram. The Department , since its inception, has been administering the work related to the collection of University Union fee, distribution of Students’ Aid Fund, conduct of different programmes etc., It was in 1996 that the Accident Claim and Medical Reimbursement Policy was implemented for the students of the affiliated colleges and Departments of Teaching and Research. This scheme is currently known as Students’ Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (SGPAIS).

 

The Department of Student Services gives creative guidance for the conduct of the activities of the University Union.
