It was in 1961 that a Department of Youth Welfare was established in the University,to promote social and cultural activities among the students. The University Union, which also started functioning in the same period, aimed at the welfare of the students in the affiliated colleges. Later, this department was renamed Department of Student Services and the elected members of the University Union began to steer the activities under the guidance of the Director, Student Services.

The office of the Director, Student Services and the University Union function at the Students' Centre, near PMG ofice in Thiruvananthapuram. The Department, since its inception, has been administering the work related to the collection of University Union fee, distribution of Students' Aid Fund, conduct of different programmes etc., It was in 1996 that the Accident Claim and Medical Reimbursement Policy was implemented for the students of the affiliated colleges and Departments of Teaching and Research. This scheme is currently known as Students' Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (SGPAIS).

The Department of Student Services gives creative guidance for the conduct of the activities of the University Union.

STUDENTS' AID FUND SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is aimed at helping students who find it difficult to pursue studies due to financial problems.

The amount : Rs 1000/ for degree students and Rs 1500/ for PG students

Who can apply? : Regular students of colleges (including professional colleges) and Departments of the University of Kerala. Those who enjoy other scholarships or stipend can also apply.

Annual Income Limit of parents : Rs.25,000/-

Application form: Please contact your Principal / Head of the Department for application form.

Document required: Income Certificate of parents from Village Officer.

How to apply : The application shall be forwarded through the Principal /Head of the Department of the University. It should be addressed to Director, Student Services, University Students Centre, PMG Jn., Vikas Bhavan.P.O, Thiruvananthapuram -695033.

Last date for application: 30th November of the academic year.

STUDENTS' GROUP PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE SCHEME (SGPAIS)

This scheme covers medical expenses due to accidents up to Rs.25,000/- (Rupees twenty five thousand only) and death claim up to Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh only) to regular students.

The premium : Rs. 25/ per student.

How to apply: Principals/Directors/HODs shall forward claim papers to the Director, Department of Student Services, University of Kerala, PMG Junction, Thiruvananthapuram.
