                       NEW                        50 Glorious Years of Existence 1963 -- 2013

The Department of Geology established in 1963 is one of the pioneering educational institutes, imparting studies on earth system sciences, in our country. The department was built on the foundation of the Division of Mineral Survey and Research (DMSR) which was affiliated to the Travancore University. The DMSR was headed by T. R. M. Lawrie, B.Sc., F.G.S. Sri. K. Kunjunni Menon, Senior Research Officer, Division of Mineral Survey and Research was appointed as Professor of Geology in the University College on 14 June 1954. Prof KK Menon subsequently became the founder Head of the Department of Geology, University of Kerala. The works of DMSR, especially of Prof. C.V Poulose, is still considered as one of the ground-breaking contributions to Kerala geology.

Over the years it developed expertise and infrastructure concomitant with the emergent trends on learning and teaching process of geological science. Contributions of our department in branches like structural geology, hydrogeology, sedimentology, petrology are reckoned modestly in the Indian geological scene. Recently we have developed Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System with massive support from DST- FIST, UGC program. Further, the department is receiving funds from agencies like UGC-SAP-DRS I (2007-12: Rs.40 lakhs), KSCSTE-SARD, and NRDMS to strengthen the petrological, optical, GIS and chemical laboratories. The department made the UGC-SAP-DRS II presentation at UGC New Delhi on 21st January 2013.

Our students are selected for employment in many National scientific organizations/ private companies as soon as they finish their course and most of the alumni are now serving as high and middle level professionals.
