The origin of the Department of Chemistry may be traced to the establishment of the University of Travancore, 1937.  It currently offers M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes and is one of the active teaching and research departments. So far, more than 200 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded to researchers from the Department and more than 850 research papers in peer-reviewed journals have been published in standard national and international journals.
